Easy DIY unpoppable bubbles for kids.

What is it about bubbles? My kids just can’t get enough of them.

I guess there is something a bit magical about how they reflect rainbow colors and just float away. They are so fragile, but somehow they hold so much hope.

We usually reserve bubbles for outdoor playtime. I know they are really just soap and water, but somehow I always end up feeling sticky when I get the solution on me. So I don’t want that inside.

But the weather doesn’t always play along for bubble time. Too hot, too rainy, too cold. Any of these can be a reason we can’t have fun with bubbles.

So let’s bring the bubbles inside. In a controlled manner of course. (That’s the key to messy play with kids.) Here is how to make magic layered bubbles at home.

DIY Magic Unpoppable Bubbles

These magic bubbles are super fun and surprisingly easy to create. You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen right now.

Supplies for Magic Bubbles

You only need 4 things to make these bubbles.

• 1 Cup Water
• 1 Tbsp Granulated Sugar
• 2 Tbsp Liquid Dish Soap
• Straw

How To Make Unpoppable Bubbles

Fortunately, your measurements don’t have to be super exact for this to work. This is the recipe I settled on, but you can play around and get what works best for you.

Step 1:

Take 1 cup of water and add in the sugar. Mix until the sugar dissolves.

Step 2:

Add the liquid dish soap and mix again carefully.

Step 3:

Spread a little bit of the solution around on your counter or table.

Take your straw and swish it around in the cup. Place the end close to your counter and blow gently to make a bubble.

Swish your straw in the bubble solution again and gently stick it inside the first bubble. Blow a second bubble.

Oh yes, we aren’t just doing a fun little playtime here, we are going to look at the science of why these bubbles work the way they do. (Though it is totally okay to just have fun with this. I just like giving the how to the activity too.)

How Do Bubbles Work?

To start with we need to know about how bubbles work.

Bubbles are just air trapped by the soap and water. They are little pockets held together by a thin soapy water skin. They pop easily because that skin is so thin.

How Do You Make the Magic Bubbles Unpoppable?

So what makes these bubbles sturdier and harder to pop?

It’s all about the sugar.

You probably guessed that the sugar was a key factor here because we can make bubbles without it, they just don’t last as long.

The water in bubbles will usually evaporate quickly, which makes them pop faster. The sugar slows this evaporation by making the skin of the bubble thicker. So they don’t pop as easily and you can try to layer them. (You can learn more here: Bubbles from Scientific America.)

These bubbles are super fun and easy to make. They will wow your kids. These instructions are for how I made these bubbles, but you can play around with the recipe a bit and find what works best for you.

1. Mix 1 Tbsp granulated sugar into 1 cup of water.
2. Add 2 Tbsp liquid dish soap and mix in.
3. Take a small amount of your solution and spread it on a clean counter or table top. (The cleanliness isn't to be rude. The bubbles just work better if there isn't any debris or sticky spots on the surface.)
4. Take a straw and swish it in the bubble solution. Hold it close to the surface of the table and blow a bubble.
5. Swish your straw in the bubble solution again. Gently poke the straw through your first bubble and blow another bubble inside. See how many bubbles you can blow!

Safety

Keep bubble solution away from eyes and do not taste or drink it. Make sure your children know how to blow out through the straw without breathing in the bubble solution.

Make sure to wipe down your surface after this activity. It can dry really sticky and be gross to clean up later.
