What is a Body Mist & How to Use One  (2024)

Always secretly wondered what makes a body mist more alluring than perfume? Is it just me? I don’t think so. Enjoy this post dedicated to the joys (and uses!) of body mist…

If you’re anything like me, you probably get distracted by the myriad of names for products out there.

From sprays to scents to fragrances to perfumes, colognes, elixirs, aromas… oh, and then you get the wild ones, which are called something entirely made up!

Well, happily, I can share that this post is, indeed, about standard body mist.

Pretty simple.

A body mist, I will say, is a lovely addition to your personal care routine.

I’ll explain much more in the next few sections about body mist, what it is, and why everyone should have one in their bag!

What is a body mist?

A body mist is a form of light fragrance used to spray or mist over the body at leisure.

It’s ideal for spritzing after a bath or shower, or when you need a quick pick-me-up on the way out the door.

Body mists, by design, are lighter and subtler than perfumes, often used to scent the skin more delicately.

The great thing about a body mist is you avoid that overpowering effect of perfume, even if you occasionally over-spritz.

You can’t actually over-spritz a body mist. Well, you can, but not like you can with perfume!

A body mist is far more delicate and less overpowering, which many people prefer (me included.)

What is body mist used for?

There are literally so many uses for body mist aside from the obvious fragrancing effect.

A body mist can also be a welcome reprieve to hot summer days, cooling you off if you spritz in the heat. Big tip! Keep a body mist in the fridge for maximum cooling effect!

Body mist, too, can be used to refresh the body and mind – or to help keep you awake if boring meetings are filling up your day.

Or why not try it as a hair fragrance? Or a foot fragrance? Or a clothing refresher?

Just be sure to avoid your eyes when you spray, but otherwise, use a body mist freely where you like, on yourself and around your home.

I sometimes mist my hair on days when I want to smell like I’ve showered but haven’t!

And it works great, offering my hair a light hydration boost as well as a sweet scent, leaving me feeling refreshed and awake.

Body mist vs. perfume

Ah, that big question!

From a scent perspective, body mist is far less intense than perfume. This is because the concentration of fragrance is lower in body mist.

Some people like this, and some people don’t, so it’s whatever you prefer, really.

The longevity of a body mist is shorter than perfume, too, usually lasting only a couple of hours, whereby perfume might last a whole day.

Also, the occasion or date might dictate when you use perfume over a body mist.

As an example – some people use perfume for special occasions only.

Perfume is more expensive to buy than body mist, which means you perhaps want to save it for those special times.

Also, the way you apply body mist is different from perfume. I’ve been taught only to apply perfume to my pulse points and would never spray perfume all over my body!

Whereby a body mist is designed to spray all over everywhere (except for the face area. See face mists here.)

How to use body mist

This is what’s so good about body mist. There is literally no way you can go wrong!

You shake the bottle so the oils or fragrance mix well in the solution, then spritz it on at about an arm’s distance away.

Spray it on your body, on clothes, on curtains, and in rooms as an air freshener – there are so many uses!

I like to keep a body mist in the car, as it leaves the interior smelling lovely as I spray it on myself.

Body mist benefits

Refresh the mind

One of the things I love about a body mist is the feeling of present-moment appreciation you get.

Maybe it’s the nice smell, or perhaps it simply lifts the energy in the room? Who knows. But I definitely get a mood lift when I spray a body mist in the air.

Convenient to use

A body mist is always at your disposal. You could keep one in the car to freshen up the air, use it in smelly closets, or use it on your clothes as you’re going out to smell fresh and spirited.

Cost Saving

If you’re watching your budget (like so many of us are), then a body mist will be far cheaper to make or buy than perfume.

The reason is that the concentration of fragrance oils is much lower in a body mist compared to perfume.

I like this fact, as it means the body mist doesn’t overpower or feel sickly. Instead, it gives a subtle hint of scent, which is lovely.

How long do body mists last for?

If stored in an airtight bottle out of sunlight, a body mist should last for one year, but it’s always best to use it up before then, particularly if it contains pure essential oils, which will deteriorate over time.

What does body mist do?

Body mist is best to use as a replacement for overpowering perfumes. In summer, in particular, a body mist makes a great alternative.

You can completely replace your perfumes with body mist, and the easiest thing is to keep the bottle in your bag and spritz freely during the day.

The scent of body mist might not last as long as a perfume, but it doesn’t really matter, as you can always add more.

I find that perfume, on the whole, makes me smell too strong!

I often feel embarrassed when I spray perfume, and the whole house smells of it for hours on end, which is why I often opt for a body mist instead.
