About CORE Recreation Center

?CORE is opening in spring 2025, and aims to be a high-quality fitness and sports center that has everything community members need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. CORE is 59,000 square feet, offering cardio and strength equipment, boutique group fitness, an indoor walking track, two gyms, habit and nutrition coaching, and more. Plus, activities that will keep kids entertained while adults exercise.

The Position:
Under general supervision, the CORE Operations Supervisor plans, organizes, and supervises staff and operations of the CORE fitness facility. The CORE Operation Supervisor oversees development and implementation of fitness and recreation programming, membership oversight, and facility use.

A primary objective of this position is to ensure that day-to-day CORE tasks are completed in a timely and standardized manner by full-time and part-time CORE staff, including delivery of excellent customer service, ensuring the facility is safe and clean, and development of fun and dynamic fitness experiences. The CORE Operations Supervisor schedules staff, monitors marketing efforts, and monitors CORE budgets, and provides regular updates to the Recreation Manager, working closely with the Recreation Manager in recommending and implementing policies, procedures, and strategies related to the CORE fitness center.

The CORE Operations Supervisor directs facility usage for both fitness and recreation sports programs, and works a variety of shifts, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays, and is expected to respond to after-hours emergencies.

Eligibility List

Candidates passing the critical criteria and who meet the minimum qualifications of the position will be ranked based on their final score in the assessment process and placed on the eligibility list. Once the District has an established eligibility list, the list will remain in effect for twelve months and will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Duties and Responsibilities

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, supervises, implements, and evaluates operational goals and strategies with CORE Lead Staff (e.g., member growth and retention, revenue, expenses, net satisfaction scores, fitness and recreation programming participation, etc.).
  • Recommends and implements program changes and corrective action to meet or achieve facility goals and objectives;
  • Leads the creation, development, and execution of marketing plans and strategies; Performs daily walk-through inspections to ensure all facility areas are clean, organized, and operational-ready;
  • Provides daily support to team members, including but not limited to ongoing leadership, motivation, coaching and development training;
  • Aligns strategic goals to achieve facility metrics for memberships, fitness, and recreation programs
  • Oversees and maintains facility equipment, including repairing and replacing items as necessary;
  • Enforces equipment and program rules and regulations, taking appropriate corrective action when necessary;
  • Safeguards facility staff and members; provide a clean and safe working environment;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all facility users and ensures facility staff provide a high degree of service to both internal and external customers; Handles escalated customer concerns and complaints not resolved at lower levels;
  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of facility service delivery and recommends improvements to programs, facilities, and staffing levels.
  • Executes emergency procedures when necessary and reports any incident of injury, theft, or broken equipment;
  • Prepares, monitors budget, and reconciles operational expenses and membership sales to ensure the facility is meeting budget goals; forecasts and projects revenue, profit and loss (P&L), and expenses; prepares financial reports;
  • Supervises facility personnel, which includes scheduling hours of work, training, evaluation of performance, coaching and counseling, and progressive discipline;
  • Supervises and coordinates new hire recruitments, onboarding, training, and promotions with CORE Leaders and keeps the Recreation Manager apprised and well-informed of staffing activities;
  • Maintains inventory and develops relationships with vendors; prepares and administers vendor service contracts and agreements; and submits service order requests for purchases (supplies, materials, and equipment) in accordance with District purchasing procedures;
  • Schedules and participates in networking/community events and promotions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


?Any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. The education or experience requirement may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the General Manager.??At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; however, both requirements cannot be modified or waived. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:??Education and Training:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fitness or physical education, hospitality, exercise physiology, athletics, or a closely related field.

Substitution of Education:
  • Experience and/or education of an equivalent level, as required in the minimum qualifications, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of progressive management experience, with two (2) years of staff supervision in a fitness facility, hospitality business, or related industry;
  • Demonstrated experience in fitness club operations management, or membership sales, and financial management, budget development, forecasting, and assessing profit and loss (P&L) statements.

Special Requirements:
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first sixty (60) days of employment; certification must be maintained throughout employment;
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license, with a satisfactory driving record as determined by the District insurance carrier, and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Certification in one of the following: ISSA-CPT, NASM-CPT, NCSF-CPT, or ACE-CPT Is preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of fitness industry best practices in operations management and membership management;
  • Principles and practices of supervision, communication, and leadership, including training, performance management, discipline, and delegating appropriate duties/tasks to CORE Leaders;
  • Administrative principles and practices in sales, marketing, and strategic planning, including goal setting, program development, implementation, evaluation, and project management;
  • Financial and business planning principles and practices, including operating budget development and administration, financial projections, and profits and losses;
  • Effective communication, customer service principles, and interpersonal skills both in-person and over the phone, including dealing with customers in difficult situations;
  • Correct use of business and report writing, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading;
  • File maintenance and record-keeping techniques;
  • Proficiency in using fitness center management software, point of sale (POS) software, Microsoft Office 365, and modern office equipment.

Ability to:
  • Lead and motivate CORE staff to understand and develop a passion for the CORE brand, values, and strategies;
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with CORE staff, members, and the general public;
  • Supervise, train, and develop staff; establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Provide constructive feedback, collaboration, and create a culture of accountability consistent with the District's vision and values;
  • Manage and drive multiple revenue streams, including memberships and retail;
  • Articulate variances in revenue/sales/expenses versus budget;
  • Recognize and analyze problems that arise. Implement solutions to meet CORE goals and objectives;
  • Deal constructively with conflict, develop effective resolutions, and be effective with the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact.
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments of self and others; manage one's time to meet deadlines;
  • Develop, interpret, and apply complex policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to assure operational compliance and best practices;
  • Use various District documents and manuals, such as the personnel handbook.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Mobility:occasional sitting and use of keyboard; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent walking, standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, and twisting; pushing, pulling, or lifting objects of twenty-five (25) pounds frequently and up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally;
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching; frequent operation of hand tools, clerical, and/or sports and fitness equipment;
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone or radio;
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasionally works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving a variety of vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, car, pick-up, and equipment trailer.

Typical Working Conditions

Work is typically performed indoors, consistent with a fitness center and office environment. Occasionally, work is performed outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat, cold, and moisture. Work may require travel to and from off-site locations throughout the District.

THE PROCESS:

Application Review (Pass/Fail): All applicants must complete and submit an application by the final filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position.

Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. The supplemental questions will be used to evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of the applicant's education, training, and experience. Depending on the size of the applicant pool, the supplemental questions may be used as a part of the supplemental screening.

Supplemental Screening: The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.

Oral Interview: All candidates who pass the application review will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview. Candidates with a passing score of 80% or higher will be ranked according to their score and placed on the Eligibility List.

Notification: Candidates who do not qualify for the eligibility list will be notified of their status after completing the first interview phase. Candidates who are placed on the eligibility list will be notified of their ranking on the list.

Selection Interview: When a vacancy opens, the top 3 ranked candidates will be invited to participate in the selection interview.

Conditional Offer: Candidates selected from the process may receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:

Reference Check: verification of work performance and employment history

Background Check: A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check;

Driving Record: A State of California, DMV driving record printout will be required.

Upon successful completion of the background check, candidates must complete the following before final appointment:

Medical: A clear tuberculosis screening, Drug screening, and physical will be required.

Work Eligibility: The District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US.

Failure to meet these pre-employment requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the conditional offer of employment.

Probationary Period: A probationary period of one (1) year is the final phase of the selection process.
